Stress PDF Print E-mail

How can we live and breathe in New England and not suffer from some degree of stress? It is rare but I do come across an occasional patient that has little to no stress in their lives and I’m always amazed. But this is rare. There are two ways of looking at stress, the stress coming at us in our world and our ability to handle and process that stress in our lives.

For instance, an emergency room doctor, glides through his work moving from one trauma to the next clearly unaffected by the high levels of stress coming at him. Then he drives home and is calm and able to make dinner for his family listening fully to them share about their days, being fully in the moment. The stresses of work stay at work and never throw him or become buried inside of him. He would be an example of someone who does have stress but is unaffected by it.

Then there is the example of the retired man who lives well within his retirement but worries about everything, and allows everything to be a huge issue, even when if you were to take things apart, all is pretty much right where it is supposed to be. This would be someone who has little stress in their life but allows the small amounts of stress to consume him.

In short, we all have a lot going on and there is usually a high demand to get it all done. We juggle: family, work, school, extended families, money, and health concerns to name a few. When someone says, “You should make some cut backs in your life and lower your stress….” you wonder, “What could I possibly let go of, to make my life less stressed when everything seems important!”

This is where acupuncture can help. What if I was able to help you handle your stress by being less affected by it in the first place? Wouldn’t that be a great place to start? All of my treatments incorporate some form of stress reduction. The patient who comes in for infertility, or digestive disorders, the one thing in common that almost everyone I treat mentions, is how much better they feel. They feel relaxed, better able to handle the stresses in their lives and more grounded. Stress today is the leading cause of many autoimmune diseases, hypertension, digestive issues and “unexplained” conditions western medicine has a very difficult time in treating. Over the years of practice, I am always amazed at how much better people are able to handle stresses in their lives by incorporating acupuncture into their health and wellness plan.

Weight / Fat Loss PDF Print E-mail
I have been doing a one-time treatment for fat loss, by means of appetite control for sometime now. I use a surgical staple inserted into the ear for 3 months to assist in appetite control. Because the ear is a complete micro-system of the body I am able to treating the entire body through just the ear. What I work with is that “full feeling” we get after eating a meal. It takes 20 minutes for the brain to register that the stomach is full. Therefore, if you eat fast you may have been full 10 minutes prior but kept eating because you didn’t know (because your brain didn’t get the signal from your stomach yet). This technique I use, works with that ‘fullness’ feedback loop, your brain actually gets the “I’m full feeling” faster. With a lifestyle work-up and other suggestions and two follow-up visits you are well on your way to controlled eating. This technique is different from a typical acupuncture session and can even be done is small groups of 3-4 people. The price is $175/pp which includes 2 free check-ups. So gather your friends and when there are 4 people, I will reduce my fee to $150/pp.

Musculoskeletal PDF Print E-mail
Soft tissue injury or muscle aches and pains are a blessing in that the tissue can repair itself over time. The speed in which a repair occurs depends upon proper blood flow to the area. Acupuncture can directly increase blood flow to the injured area along with promoting balance and healing to the overall meridian and or organ system which was weakened to allow an injury to occur in the first place or was weakened by a traumatic event. Even long standing musculoskeletal injuries benefit with acupuncture and with the herbal additions I recommend future injury incidents are lessened.

Smoking Cessation PDF Print E-mail
Similar to what I do above with appetite control, the smoking cessation treatment I find to be most helpful also targets the ear with a strategically placed surgical staple. I work with individuals giving a lot of helpful advice about triggers and learning some new positive habit forming behaviors. Often people fear that if they quit smoking they will gain weight which prevents them from having success with smoking cessation. Combining the two techniques, appetite control along with smoking cessation can serve as a helpful tool when considering the alternative. It takes 3 months to form a new habit. I’d like to help you make not smoking and not over eating your new healthy habits!

Pain PDF Print E-mail

“Acupuncture is effective in the treatment of shoulder periarthritis. Of the 210 subjects studied, 158 were cured, 40 improved and 12 showed no significant improvement. Another study suggests that acupuncture added to other modalities for neck pain shows improvement in neck pain and disability compared to treatment with routine care alone. J Traditional Chinese medicine, 2003 Sept; 23(3):202-02”

Pain is probably the most familiar area where people believe acupuncture to be helpful, and rightfully so. How often have you heard of someone, a friend, colleague or relative who had a chronic pain condition and tried everything and with their last hope went to see an acupuncturist and are now pain free! Yes, that happens, and what they don’t tell you is not only did their pain go away, but their insomnia did too, or they no longer have that acid reflux flare ups. Acupuncture almost always makes someone’s pain either go away permanently or to such a degree that the pain is no longer a grave concern. And unlike physical therapy, (which I think is wonderful) I work on all areas of pain at the same time, whether it’s low back pain combined with knee pain or a shoulder injury combined with a foot problem, sometimes, the more that is presented to me the simpler the treatment pattern is for you.

Digestive PDF Print E-mail
A remarkable discovery with acupuncture is how common it is to clear up acute or chronic digestive orders with acupuncture alone or in conjunction with Chinese herbal Medicine. Irritable bowel, Constipation or Acid Reflux to name a few are examples of conditions which can be cleared up or lessened to a significant degree by incorporating acupuncture over a semi short period of time. A common finding in our culture and region is acid reflux, which generally has a stress component linked to it. Freeing the energy blockages from the associated Wood Meridian, has a profound effect on clearing up digestive disorders.

Sexual Dysfunction PDF Print E-mail
When we consider quality of life we need to look at sexual dysfunction as a means of assessing where we are within our model for success. Freeing up any blockages where there is not proper flow of energy to allow for a healthy sexual lifestyle can be achieved with acupuncture with usually an addition of Chinese Herbs. Whether it’s impotence or even a generally low libido, acupuncture can offer a solution.

Longevity PDF Print E-mail
Balance, harmony and health are achieved with proper, sleep, stress reduction, hydration, exercise and nutrition. These are all factors in which we have control over. All persons who treat with me have these areas of health and well-being reviewed and adjusted during their entire treatment with me to maximize quality of life and promote longevity. Once our goal of treatment is reached I will suggest people come in quarterly for balancing and ensuring that which has been achieved through acupuncture is maintained.

Psychological PDF Print E-mail
Psychological issues are real. Mental issues are real, felt, chemical imbalances which produce often negative physical changes detrimental for optimum health and wellbeing. Acupuncture is not only wonderful in treating stress but in handling other more chronic conditions such as: anxiety, depression and bi-polar disorders. I have been trained in both Chinese and Japanese style acupuncture both of which assist in the flow of energy to alleviate all psychological conditions. There is a specific Japanese technique I use when dealing with any psychological condition which I find to be very powerfully healing.

Hormone Balancing PDF Print E-mail

Acupuncture is all about balancing, when I give a treatment after a complete health history is taken and other diagnostic observations are made, it’s balancing that I strive for. I believe that the human body is an amazing machine and if we supply the right amounts of nutrition, proper hydration, sleep, stress reduction and exercise, our body will work as hard as it can naturally to achieve overall health and balance. Hormone balancing is just one of these many balancing acts that take place all the time. But sometimes, we need some help and that’s where acupuncture can fit in remarkably.

Gynecological / Infertility PDF Print E-mail

“A study published in the Journal of Fertility & Sterility, found acupuncture improves pregnancy success rate by 50% in women undergoing in-vitro fertilization. 2002 April;77(4):721-4”

Regulating a woman’s menstrual cycle is paramount for optimum health when concerning the overall health of a woman whether she is trying to conceive or not. Having a healthy menstrual cycle, a normal cycle, is used as an indicator of overall health and balance in a woman. TCM, Traditional Chinese Medicine, (Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine) is very helpful in maintaining and normalizing a woman’s menstrual cycle.

My approach in dealing with any fertility issues is to look first at regulating the menstrual cycle and then fine tuning any changes that need to be addressed from there. Men make up a third of the infertility cases and generating a good number of healthy thriving sperm is another area of concentration I work at within my practice. TCM in conjunction with IUI, IVF and any assisted reproductive techniques is a wonderful mix. So often the fertility drugs used can really deplete vital fluids and the energy necessary for conception to take place whether a woman is going through either medicated IUI or IVF treatments. Acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal medicine has been shown to positively effect the amount of blood flow to the uterus one of the biggest advantages to conceiving and to significantly lower stress in women trying to conceive. Working with men and women and fertility is a passion of mine and one I take very seriously. I am on the faculty of the New England School of Acupuncture and teach other acupuncture students about male and female fertility challenges, and am blessed now with many pictures of healthy, happy babies.

Hypertension PDF Print E-mail
With hypertension there is usually both a physical and psychological component which influence the blood pressure leading to hypertension. When the blood vessels become narrowed there is greater pressure within the cardiovascular system paired and with stress of any kind is a sure recipe for disaster. In my treatments I use an Herbal remedy which after just 28 days shows a significant reduction in lipid peroxides which are the culprits to the narrowing of the vessel walls, in conjunction with acupuncture which harmonizes energy flow and facilitates healing both physically and mentally. I have had numerous people either reduce their blood pressure meds and many get off drugs like Lipitor altogether.

Neurological PDF Print E-mail
Acupuncture will not regrow physically destructed nerves, but will assist the body to it’s fullest level of healing. I often recommend a natural soft tissue and overall body addition to the diet and assist in a total body treatment and do local work to stimulate energy and blood flow to the area in concern. I have worked with people that have gone to the farthest reaches with western medicine and still be seriously inflicted with nerve pain or even numbness. Sometime presenting with surgery as their only option left, and coming to see me to avoid surgery. What a miracle to work with these patients and have them leave pain free, or have their condition lessen to such a degree that they don’t feel they need to even consider surgery anymore. All neurological cases are very unique and each treatment design I develop to assist someone in their healing is also unique to them as well.

Respiratory PDF Print E-mail
Asthma, Sleep Apnea and other respiratory issues are often linked to what we consider lung organ imbalances. Over time of exploring these conditions with the patient’s I have had, I often find another link related to food and stress exacerbating all respiratory issues. In Chinese Medicine lung issues are also related to the skin and when a respiratory condition surfaces, checking the skin can often reveal further treatment opportunities. Thinning of the hair can be reversed by addressing the lung channel as well as easing stress levels at the same time.
